Hello everyone and welcome back to my short series of automotive tools and fixes for the new weekend warrior auto mechanic. In the past we have spent so much time on the tools, but in today's article I'm going to give you some basic instructions for checking your air filter. The first thing you have to do is find it. On older carbureted engine you will usually air cleaner is large and round with the snorkel coming from. The newer cars, they are usually rectangular in shape in the vicinity of any one of the fenders.
Once you have located your air filter, remove the wing nut or undo any other devices that hold the air box lid down and removed when you find the air filter sits inside. Do you know if your air filter should be changed or replaced from outside, pulled out of the case and hold it to light. If you can see light through the filter than it is probably okay. If you can, try to drop it on the bottom side down, to relax some of the dirt. If you do this several times and still can not see through it, it should be replaced.
Given the importance of your air filter to remember is to change at least one air or every 20,000 miles. If you drive in dusty or dirty areas, then you will want to reduce the service period in a half or two times a year or every 10,000 miles.
